Bio Blitz

Be a citizen scientist and gather biodiversity observations!

We will be identifying species from the moana via snorkelling, and the ngahere/forest and the wetland via land, and recording our observations on the INaturalist app to contribute to a global citizen science initiative.

What to expect copy

Your day will consist of a mix of water and land-based exploration. Expect to spend about an hour in the water, and an hour on land. All activities are lead by our expert guides.

Contribute to a valuable citizen science-lead initiative to learn more about our natural environment by recording what we find, meet like-minded locals and learn something new about conservation and ecology!

Age range

Snorkelling based bioblitz: You must be 10 years or older and have prior snorkelling experience to participate in the snorkelling based bioblitz activity. All participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult in the water.


Land based bioblitz: This is suitable for 5 year olds and up, no prior skills required. You must be able to walk over uneven terrain for up to 1km. All participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

You must have prior snorkelling experience to participate in the snorkelling based bioblitz activity. 


The land-based bioblitz is suitable for those with no prior skills. 

What we'll provide

🤿 Snorkelling gear — wetsuits, fins, masks and snorkels

What you'll bring

🥾 Sturdy/suitable shoes you do not mind getting wet/muddy

👒 Sun smart gear — hat, sunblock and sunglasses

🏖️ Togs and towel

💧 Water bottle

🐠 Snorkelling gear (optional)

📷 Camera/phone for taking photos to upload to INaturalist. If you have an underwater camera for the snorkelling activity, please bring it

🐛 New Zealand plant, insect, bird or fish ID books (optional)
