He Kākano Community Native Nursery
Making healthier waterways with riperian planting

He Kākano is our community native plant nursery based in Whangārei. Run by volunteers, we grow eco-sourced native plants for riparian restoration projects across Northland. We also support local groups and schools through hands-on learning in seed collection, propagation, and planting. Each March, we sell a small number of surplus plants to the public.
Location
You'll find us at 8 First Avenue, Avenues in Whangārei.

History
He Kākano was established in 2006 as a community native plant nursery and learning space for riparian restoration in Whangārei. It began when students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rawhitiroa, inspired by the Whitebait Connection Programme, wanted to keep helping their local waterways. With support from Whangārei District Council, who provided the site, the nursery was set up to grow native plants, teach propagation skills, and involve the community in freshwater restoration.
