School Shark - Tupere

Galeorhinus galeus

School sharks are common around NZ's coast, found down to 200 m deep. Smaller than bronze whalers, males grow to 1.7 m and females to 1.9 m. They have a blue-grey top, white belly, long pointed snout, and notched tail. While not threatened in NZ, they face pressure overseas from overfishing and habitat loss. These migratory sharks can travel over 5,000 km, even crossing the Tasman Sea to Australia.
