Trevally - Araara

Pseudocranax dentex

Trevally are schooling fish found in northern North Island, especially around headlands and islands where currents concentrate plankton. With blue-green coloration, metallic overtones, and yellow-tinged fins, they often have a dark blotch on the gill plate. Both pelagic and demersal, they grow quickly, reaching maturity at five years and living up to 45 years, growing over 60cm. Trevally play a key role in multi-species foraging, herding krill and small fish to the surface, aiding seabirds in their hunt.
