Sandager’s Wrasse - Tāngahangaha

Coris sandeyeri

Found in northern New Zealand and Australia, Sandager’s Wrasse live on rocky reefs down to 60 m. These fish form harems with one male and many females—when the male dies, the dominant female changes sex! Males have bold, colourful bands, while females are paler with two pink spots. They feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and juveniles even clean parasites off larger fish in a helpful symbiotic relationship.
