Red pigfish - Paakurakura

Bodianus unimaculatus

Pigfish, large red-striped members of the wrasse family, are found in rocky reef kelp forests and often follow divers. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, where juveniles start as females and may change to males. Females are pinkish-red with dark stripes, while males are pink with a dark dorsal blotch. With large mouths and thick lips, they feed on benthic invertebrates. Males grow larger, reaching 50cm, while females max out at 30cm. Pigfish can be befriended with broken kina.
