Longfin eel - Tuna
Anguilla dieffenbachia

There are two main types of eels: shortfin and longfin. Eels are migratory, starting in the Pacific Ocean and returning to NZ’s rivers and lakes to live for up to 25 years before migrating back to the sea to spawn. Loss of wetlands and overfishing have reduced their numbers. Longfin eels are excellent climbers, navigating waterfalls and dams. They are typically dark brown or grey-black, though occasionally bright yellow. Longfins have a longer dorsal fin and loose wrinkles, unlike shortfins.
