Leatherjacket - Kōkiri
Meuschenia scaber

Leatherjackets are found around NZ, inhabiting rocky reefs and feeding on sponges, molluscs, and zooplankton. Their leathery skin protects them from predators, and sharp teeth help scrape prey off rocks. As part of the triggerfish family, they use a retractable spine for defense. Leatherjackets reach maturity at 18 cm and, as juveniles, feed on soft comb jellies and salps. They are found at depths of 20-200m.
