Blue Maomao

Scorpis violaceus

Blue maomao are schooling reef fish found near shore to 30 m deep. Juveniles are grey with yellow fins, turning bright blue as they grow. Often seen in shallow waters with young Sweep, they form large, dazzling schools for safety. The iconic Blue Maomao Arch at the Poor Knights is a must-see, where these fish create a stunning underwater spectacle.
