Sunfish - Rātāhuihui

Mola alexandrini

The sunfish is a record-breaker—it's the heaviest bony fish on Earth, with some reaching over 2,500 kg! They look like a giant floating head with a tiny, beak-like mouth used to hoover up jellyfish. Despite their awkward, flat shape, their rudder-like fins make them surprisingly efficient swimmers. You’ll often see them flapping a fin on the surface to "sunbathe," which frequently leads people to mistake them for sharks. As jellyfish eaters, they often mistake plastic bags for food, which can kill them. They are also accidentally caught as bycatch by commercial fishers.
