Kahawai, native to New Zealand, are found in coastal areas, estuaries, and harbors, feeding on smaller fish, crustaceans, and plankton. Recognizable by their blue-green backs, silver bodies, and black spots, they grow up to 40–50 cm. Kahawai are migratory, spawning in summer and autumn, and forming large schools in coastal waters. They play a vital role in marine ecosystems as a key nutrient link. Predators include seals, dolphins, sharks, and seabirds like the white-fronted tern.
