Kōaro, part of the whitebait family, are known for their impressive climbing abilities and elongated shape. With a dull green/olive-brown color and broad head, they are distinguished by their larger pectoral and pelvic fins. Found in fast-flowing waters, especially inland and in forested areas, they face habitat loss due to riparian vegetation destruction. Historically fished by iwi such as Te Arawa and Tūwharetoa, kōaro can complete their entire life cycle in lakes, unlike other whitebait species.
