Hagfish | Tuere
Eptatretus cirrhatus
.jpg)
Is it an eel? A ghost? No, it’s the hagfish! This bizarre creature has no jaw, no spine, and is almost eyeless. Living deep on the seafloor, they use two pairs of rasp-like teeth to scavenge dead sea creatures, sometimes eating them from the inside out - yikes! If a predator tries to take a bite, the hagfish deploys its superpower: slime! They release threads that expand 10,000 times in seawater, creating a sticky mess that chokes the attacker. With six sensory barbells and a jet-black body, they are easily one of the weirdest (and slimiest) residents of the deep blue.
