Broadnose Sevengill
Notorynchus cepedianus

Meet the only living member of its family! Unlike most sharks that have five gill slits, this unique predator has seven. Growing up to 3 metres long, they sport a thick, spotted body and a blunt nose that helps them blend in. While they love hanging out in shallow bays during the summer, they’ve been spotted over 500 metres deep! As one of the top predators in the ocean, their diet is basically "anything that fits." From other sharks and rays to fish and marine mammals, the sevengill is the ultimate undisputed heavyweight of the New Zealand coast. Due to their preferred environment, warming waters, habitat loss, and a decline in prey species are all threats to this ika.
